Statuses are very important to the sales function and hence Sales Portal.
 
For years, there was nearly endless literature on Sales Steps in the Sales Funnel.  If this is still important to your process, this is where you would enter them and then manage a contact through the sales process, e.g. prospect, farming, working, customer, repeat customer, inactive, etc.  It does not matter how many steps them there are in process process generally from about 3 to 6.  Set each one up as status.
 
Lead management and nuturing it is getting to be important.  We kind of distinquish a lead from a prospect based upon some sort of scoring alogrthim.  Leads can come in from over the internet (or from other sources) basically unwashed and then through some scoring we would decide which to work immediately on and which to nuture.   These steps in your lead to prospect process would also be status which we would include in this section.
 
Now days with the advent of passive Organic Marketing, and Community Building, one can also add community statuses, and Web 2.0 contacts eventhough they will not be directly contacted.   This can be useful for tracking companies that link into your sites, Blogs which influence your markets, etc.  You would just add these communities as statuses.
